He's responsible for them affirming their already existing decision to axe story.
Yeah, by all accounts the current direction is what Tanabe and Intelligent Systems wish to do.

In this kotaku comment the writer indicates that the coins you get from battles are useful for making Mario stronger. He seems to think the rewards for battling are worth it.
He also says you can get a ridiculous amount of coins from a single fight. Between that and overworld coins it hard to not have seriously concerns.
That gives you an incentive to battle. From most of the footage that I've seen, you don't get anywhere near as many coins from the overworld that you do from battling. As long as the prices are exorbitant, I think it can work.
I'm a little worried about Miyamoto's story aversion.
I get it. Focusing on gameplay has been to Mario's benefit. It's the reason it's survived so long, but him vetoing stories in cases where it doesn't harm things....harms things.
There's his Flipping the Table on the Galaxy 2 people for what they put into Galaxy 1 (which they had to do on the down-low apparently) and now there's this stuff with Sticker Star. And the thing is, Sticker Star is an RPG.
毛根草THAT'S EXACTLY THE KIND OF GAME THAT NEEDS A STORY!!!毛根草
Story is actually one of the few places I'm less worried about Origami King, since they're at least going forward with a new villain that forces Mario and Bowser to team up.
Gameplay sure, that's a bummer, but I'm all for anything that brings back the anarchic imagination of past Paper Mario.
I don't get the impression they think of Sticker Star and the subsequent games as RPG's. That might be easier to swallow if they had something genuinely compelling to offer instead, but even by the more favorable accounts, both SS and CS have big problems.
The colorful personalities and dialogue are the reason Paper Mario, TTYD and Super Paper Mario are so fondly remembered.
Notably, Super Mario Odyssey was mostly done by the newer generation and it's the most creative and fun experience I've had with Mario in a decade at least. When they aren't constrained by stuff like "Just use stuff from Super Mario World" they can really create something special.
Just use stuff from Mario World is most inaccurate sentence I've ever read describing anything from that time...
They literally just started to use things from World before Odyssey..
Miyamoto is indeed from a time where games had excuse plots, but Ocarina of Time had a pretty good story.
And agreed Rob, Miyamoto making an RPG plotless was not a point in it's favor.
I really like Mario 3D World's story and setting. The Sprixies and their kingdom are so cute, and I loved playing as Peach!
EDIT: r/papermario claims Origami King was leaked! be careful, everyone!

Again, Miyamoto is misblamed.
Tanabe is doing exactly what he want to do with the series.

But like you am i hyped for a Peach boss fight but if it turns out there isn't...
Miyamoto is misblamed for [[https://sourcegaming.info/2017/03/14/new-content-approaching-rosalina/ Galaxy's storybook, too.
"In an interview, Shigeru Miyamoto stated that he had planned the usual kidnapping of Princess Peach, but also "had another cast of characters, a princess from outer space and her family of talking stars, who had a deeper, sadder story that was revealed through elegant picture-book scenes throughout the game." This storybook was known in-game as Rosalina's Storybook, which told Rosalina's backstory and was written by Yoshiaki Koizumi late at night so that no one would find out about it."
"An interview with Nintendo Power brought forth another interesting revelation: Rosalina痴 storybook was secretly written by Koizumi under the cloak of night, where no wondering eyes could have learned of it. Miyamoto was intrigued by this admission, but Koizumi痴 response was simple: 添es, it was very important to me.
"Yoshiaki Koizumi, director of Super Mario Galaxy, was the writer of the storybook. He wrote the script late at night when no one was around so no one would know what was in it. The next day, he told Shigeru Miyamoto about the story and presented it to him. Miyamoto was surprised that Yoshiaki wrote the script late at night with nobody around."

I guess we all owe Miyamoto an apology in regards to Paper Mario.....but that doesn't mean that we still cannot rage over the direction of the series.
It's still good to hear that people working on Mario do care about developing plot.
Like i'm not saying Mario should have like a deep character or anything, he's fine as is and we should leave his personality to our imagination but the world and cast should have more plot to reel us in.
I hope one day we see Sarasaland again.
And thus Intelligent Systems are a bunch of 毛根草DARKEST SOUL, EVIL'S COURIER, SERVE ME AS A SKELETON WARRIOR!

Treehouse stream with TOK embed here:
Got 49 Shines in Super Mario Sunshave! (That name comes from an inside joke where I misread the game's title, and it stuck.)
Not really fair that EAD can have so much with the Mario world while everyone else is stuck with brand integrity rules that make the Mario world lifeless and boring.
